Solo show 'Melody of the Elusive' Danielle van Zadelhoff - Gallery Ysebaert
The exhibition runs until March 22, 2026.
It all began in 2013 at the Antwerp railway station. Holding a camera for the very first time, Danielle van Zadelhoff captured a mother and child walking across the platform. It was a mundane scene, yet the way their posture and gaze told a story moved her deeply. In that moment, she realized: images can capture emotions where words fall short.
What makes Van Zadelhoff’s work so extraordinary is the purity and vulnerability radiating from every creation. By first engaging in intimate conversation with her models, Danielle succeeds in developing a visual language that is both personal and relatable. Her camera unveils the story behind the individual; as a spectator, you feel an immediate connection through the sincerity of the emotions. Her compositions compel you to pause and reflect on feelings that would otherwise fleetingly pass by.
The contrast between light and dark is a defining element of Van Zadelhoff’s work. She seeks out the shadows to focus on what we often fail to see—the side of a person that usually remains hidden, the subconscious. For her, these dark areas are not a void, but rather the place where true emotion resides.
The tension in her work stems from the use of chiaroscuro. This technique, used by masters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt to create depth and drama through a specific light source, lends her photographs a timeless atmosphere. Yet, while the technique recalls the past, her work remains profoundly contemporary; the portraits tell stories of our own time.
Van Zadelhoff’s work receives significant international acclaim from leading art institutions. What she creates resonates with many. In this way, each portrait forms its own melody of the elusive; a moment of human emotion that continues to linger long after.
